There are men. There are extraordinary men. And then there are legends.
Dr Ahmad Abdul Hai is one such man. A doctor, an entrepreneur, an educationist, a philanthropist ‐ but above all, a legend. And there's good reason for it. One needs to read through the inspiring story of his life, the compelling anecdotes that comprise his best and worst moments, and the engrossing trivia that have collectively made and moved him, to understand just how ‐ and why ‐ the surgeon cum philanthropist is an icon for the masses and what makes him a "person extraordinaire".
Dr Ahmad Abdul Hai retired as professor and head of department of surgery at Patna Medical College and Hospital, after nearly 35 years. During this period from 1977 to 2000, he guided more than 50 surgeons for their postgraduate degree.
The four Hai siblings were born between 1942 and 1949. The Indian subcontinent was going through political turmoil trying to gain independence from British rule and the ensuing partition leading to India and Pakistan.
Life was good growing up as a child in an elite Muslim family in Patna, which was still a small town with a well-protected residential area of lavish homes and gardens. Gandhi Maidan was a true heaven where the siblings took walks in the evening with their nanny or 'Aya' and played for hours on the green grass. There was hardly any traffic or congestion.
Dr Ahmad Abdul Hai and his wife have a son and two daughters. All three are medical professionals as are his two sons-in-law. The son, Dr Mahmed Abdul Hai, is a laparoscopic surgeon in Patna itself. He is married to Amina and they have two children. The elder daughter, Kazeen, is settled in New York and has three children, while the younger daughter, Zareen, is in England and has one child.
Though a very busy person, Dr Ahmad Abdul Hai has done a commendable job of balancing his various professional, personal and social responsibilities with consummate ealan. Currently, the noted surgeon is managing director and chief consultant at Hai Medicare and Research Institute in Patna, director of general surgery and head of academic courses at Paras HMRI Hospital in Patna, chairman of Hai Foundation, chief editor of Association of Surgeons of India (ASI) text book of Surgery published by McGraw Hill, among others. His past roles have been equally noteworthy, or even more so. He has been the national president of ASI, which is the national association of over 15,000 Indian surgeons and one of the largest bodies of surgeons in the world with its headquarters at Chennai. Dr Hai was also the vice-president of the Indian Section of Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, and vice-president of the Indian Section of International College of Surgeons.
"A staunch believer in both social equality and equity, the noted surgeon has always ensured that he never lets caste or religious considerations pervade his professional or personal commitments"
