Dr Ahmad Abdul Hai has been intrinsically involved in social and community welfare, over and above his professional compulsions. That's how he got connected with American Federation of Muslims from India (AFMI). The group was of the opinion that the only way to improve the lot of the Muslims was through education; an opinion that was fully supported and endorsed by Dr Hai too.
With the active efforts of Dr Hai and other like-minded people of AFMI, the conference was held at S K Memorial Hall in Patna, in 1996. Dr. A R Kidwai, the then governor of Bihar, played a pivotal role in making it happen, acting as both a pillar of support and an enabler in the process.
The then Prime Minister of India, H D Deve Gowda, was the chief guest at the occasion, and the meet, attended and presided over by the then chief minister Shri Lalu Prasad Yadav as well as other political bigwigs, was an unprecedented success. Many issues were discussed, the political leadership lent their ears and support, and for the first time a group representing the Indian Muslim community in the US cohesively and collectively strategised on ways to integrate the community into the main- stream of society. The Muslim community in Bihar also extended their unconditional support and solidarity towards the cause.
In fact, it was here only that the Forum for Literacy Awareness and Muslim Education or FLAME, another brainchild of Dr Hai and other like-mind- ed people like noted Urdu poet Shafi Mashhadi, was inaugurated by the PM.
This was a time marked by great vicissitudes in the political and social landscape of Bihar. The oppressed and deprived lot including the Muslims was finally finding its voice, empowered by the political developments of the 90s.The Sachar Committee report came few years after, and the Muslim community collectively realised that education was the only way forward. Dr Hai remained resolutely at the vanguard of all such efforts that sought to ameliorate the social, economic and educational conditions of Muslims.
In late 80s, Dr Ahmad Abdul Hai and another foresighted individual, Mr. Justice Sarwar Ali, the then chief justice of Patna High Court, brain stormed about ways to bring about economic and social equity for the Muslim community. They strongly believed that education was the key.
The duo decided to open an engineering and a medical college. That's how Maulana Azad College of Engineering and Technology (MACET), Patna, came about. The college was established by Millat Education Society, Patna, in 1987. It is one of the most prestigious minority colleges and the oldest private engineering college of Bihar. MACET was set up keeping in view the rapid technological growth and changes taking place in the industry. Today, it is a degree level technical college approved by AICTE, New Delhi, and affiliated to Aryabhatt Knowledge University, Patna, Bihar.
As an educationist and a social crusader, Dr Ahmad Abdul Hai believes that while madarsas are not in the best of health their curriculum is grossly outdated. They have, however, managed to achieve something which is both notable and remarkable - they have initiated lakhs of Muslim boys into some kind of structured education process. In the absence of the network of madarsas across the country, these boys would have had practically no education, and that's worst. He says: "It's like you have a shirt that's torn and dirty. Still, it's better than having no shirt at all, especially when you know your survival depends on you covering your back. Similarly, the role of madarsas in the education of children belonging to Muslim community cannot be undermined. We can, of course, make the best of what we have been given and try to update the curriculum in madarsas. Religious and other non-profit bodies should look at incorporating processes and curricula that foster a scientific temperament in madarsas attending kids. The government's and community's intervention and support is required and welcome."
